About Lacquerware Lacquerware is Japanese Traditional Art LACQUERWARE is the oldest traditional art craft in Japan, with a history that dates back as far as the Stone Age. It refers to everything that can be coated with URUSHI lacquer. A coat of lacquer will add the striking aura of luxury. Laquerware is the Japanese aesthetics embodiment. Hand Crafted by
1. Lacquer Tapping 2. Base Carving 3. Lacquer Paint Blending 4-6. Base Coating in 3 Layers 7. Drawing 8. Gold Powdering 9-10. Final Coating & Polishing Delicate Coating In spite of their layers of lacquer and gold gilding, coatings on our items are under 3mm thick. You can actually see textures of wooden bases underneath. Each process is done by a professional artisan who specialises in that technique. Artisans train themselves for decades - 10 years to hold a brush in the perfect position, another 10 years to draw a fine line, yet another 10 years to colour smoothly. Our beautiful lacquerware is created with extreme delicacy, by such prestigious artisans. Imperial Since 1919, Over the course of our 90 years history, we have been granted Royal Warrant from the Japanese Emperor. He has personally appointed to use our lacquer items, and we continue to serve all the lacquerware used at His Imperial Household till today.
Awarded for Traditional Craftsmanship Many of our artisans have been awarded the national title "Living National Treasures of Craftsmanship." Their lacquer creation techniques are one and only, and their celebrated items cannot be created by anyone else. Unique craftsmanship is the very reason why our lacquerware continue to be the Emperor's favourite after nearly a century. Sparkling MAKI-E Gilding with A typical decoration technique in Japan's lacquerware creation, MAKI-E gilding applies gold in multiple yet thin layers. We draw pictures by sprinkling ultrafine gold powders over wet lacquer. What characterises our MAKI-E gilding is its soothing touch, made possible with our wide variety of gold powders. We have more than 300 variations in total, each with different nuance in size, thickness, and form. They have been hammered out from solid gold to 1-1.2/10,000mm, so thin that it lets light shine right through. URUSHI Lacquer Coating, URUSHI lacquer is a 100% ecological coating material made from sap of special trees (Rhus Verniciflua). One tree can produce 200ml sap at most in a lifetime, which makes it highly rare. URUSHI lacquer trees may grow in other Asian countries, but Japanese ones are famous for containing the most amount of sparkling components (They are even named in Japanese, Urushiol.). Our URUSHI lacquer has 65-70% of shining urushiol in comparison to others' 5-10%. Delicate RADEN Inlays of In RADEN inlay decoration, we sharpen pearls on a whetstone and put them on lacquer surfaces of items. Smoothly polished pearls give a jewel-like shine, changing colours between purple, blue, and pink. Traditional Good Luck Symbols Our lacquer items are decorated with good luck symbols that have long been cherished in Japan. Celebrating high spirits and prosperity, they make perfect gifts for various kinds of occassions. |
